Sr. Virginia Killam, OSU

Although God calls everyone to different vocations, Sr. Virginia Killam, OSU always knew she would be part of a religious vocation. Right after she graduated from highschool in 1933, she joined the convent of the Ursuline Sisters. Sr. Virginia has been an active and happy sister since she was 17. She has been involved in other activities aside from the normal praying, meditating, and examination of conscience. She says that nuns are just like regular people and they like to watch TV and play music just as much as the next person. Indeed, Sr. Killam has kept herself very busy. She worked in Mexico and Spain and even lived in Cuba from 1943-1975. While in Cuba, she taught at a school for girls, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. After her years in Cuba, she founded an organization for the alumnae of the school she taught at in Cuba. She still meets with those girls she taught even to this day.

Sister Killam also commented on the process of becoming a sister. She said that first you must decide what you are suited for. Some people are meant to be part of families with children. Some people are meant to be priests or sisters. She also said that the convent evaluates the candidates and talks about if they was the potential sister and if she really wants to be there. So, overall nuns keep themselves very busy with their daily duties and other special events, such as going to the fair with nuns from around the world.
